భజ గోవిందం - 4

10. వయసి గతే కః కామ వికారః శుష్కే నీరే కః కాసారః |
క్షీణే విత్తే కః పరివారో, జ్ఞాతే తత్త్వే కః సంసారః ||

వయసు గతించి, యౌవనం క్షీణిస్తే, ఇక కామవికారం (తృష్ణ) ఎక్కడుంటుంది ? నీరు ఎండిపోతే ఇక చెరువు ఎక్కడుంటుంది ? సిరిసంపదలు హరించుకుపోతే ఇక ఆశ్రిత జనాలెక్కడుంటారు ? తత్వజ్ఞానం కలిగితే ఇక సంసార వ్యామోహం ఎక్కడుంటుంది ?

11. మా కురు ధనజనయౌవన గర్వం, హరతి నిమేషాత్ కాలః సర్వం|
మాయామయమిదమఖిలం బుద్ధ్వా, బ్రహ్మ పదం త్వం ప్రివిశ విదిత్వా||

నీకు విశేషమైన ధనమున్నదనిగాని, ప్రజల మద్దతు ఉన్నదని గాని, యౌవన శక్తి ఉన్నదనిగాని గర్వించకు. వీటన్నిట్ని కాలం ఒక్కనిముషంలోనే హరించి వేయగలదు సుమా! ఇదంతా మాయామయం అని గుర్తించి బ్రహ్మపదాన్ని తెలుసుకొని అందు ప్రవేశించు.

12. దినయౌమిన్యౌ సాయం ప్రాతః, శిశిరవసంతౌ పునరాయాతః |
కాలః క్రీడతి గచ్చత్యాయుః తదపి న ముంచత్వాశావాయుః ||

రాత్రీపగళ్ళు, ఉదయం సాయంసంధ్యలు, శిశిర వసంతాది ఋతువులు, క్రమం తప్పకుండా ఒకదానివెనుక ఒకటిగా, వస్తూపోతూ, చక్రంలాగ తిరుగుతూ ఉంటే, కాలం, వినోదంగా ఆడుకుంటూ, ఆయువును హరించుకుపోతుంటే, మానవుడు మాత్రం తన ఆశా, కాక్ష, మమకారాల గూడును విడువకుండా అంటిపెట్టుకుని ఉంటాడు.


Verse 10

When youth is gone, where is room for sport in lust ? Where is the lake when the water has dried up? When wealth is gone, where are the kinsfolk ? When the Truth is known, where is the worldly bond ?

Sorrow and suffering afflict only so long as there is delusion in the mind. When delusion vanishes, giving place to wisdom, sorrow and suffering disappear like mist before the sun. The only remedy for delusion is wisdom. To secure it, good conduct, character and devotion are necessary. In the absence of these, mere knowledge got by reading books will not give wisdom. That is the difference between learning and knowledge of the self.

Verse 11

The pleasure and riches of worldly life are delusive appearances. Realizing that they are a passing show, prepare for the way of renunciation. The wise have warned that it requires maturity of mind to take the path of renunciation. the Renunciation of the immature will only make them objects of ridicule.


Do not be proud of your youth and health. Do not be vain and say :: 'I have wealth, kinsmen, friends and also servants to do my bidding. What more do I need ? " when fortune begins to frown on you, all these will disappear in the trice. All your arrogance will change in a moment into shame. Realise the insatiability of things and lead your days with due humility. Give up desires and attachments, do your duties and then seek knowledge of the self. A wise man will tread the path of renunciation as a result of his wisdom.

Verse 12

Day and night, morn and eve,
Winter and spring, come and dance and go.
Thus while Time sports, life fleets unobserved.
Yet desire does not leave us
but holds us in its grip.

Like a beautiful damsel, Times dances on the stage of life. Every step of hers, night and day, summer and winter, every clasp of her lovely palms, quietly casts off the days of your life. As the Kural has it, every day is but the sawing off a slice from your life, it is nothing but that, though it seems beautiful. We know this ; yet we do not give up the desires of the flesh. What folly ?
